Crochet Break

By , February 17, 2010 10:40 pm

I took a break tonight from Olympic Knitting to finish up my Market Bag at my last night of crochet class at Crafty Planet.

I also encountered a bit of unsolicited photography help from a certain camera hog…

Coalescence

As I’ve mentioned before, my Nana was a quite a crafty lady.  And like most crafty people, she had a lot of crafty stuff.  This pile was all we could fit in our car for the trip back from the holidays, but really is only the tip of the iceberg.  (Cute kitty included for scale.)

I know I haven’t posted about my China socks yet or the cute hat I knit over the last Wedding Weekend Whirlwind trip two weeks ago, but I don’t have pictures of those yet and I am just LOVING how my owls sweater turned out so much that I had to share!

hoot5

This sweater was designed to be very close fitting, but I purposely fiddled with my gauge and incs/decs to make it a more roomy pullover but still have some shaping.  (Yes, Celeste is still a total camera hog.)

I lucked out by finding the perfect color buttons, but it wasn’t until I sat down to sew them on (all 32!!) that I discovered I liked the backs even more than the fronts. The backs are a bit more subtle, but still catch the light.

Hooray for owls!!

Haven’t You Always Wanted A Monkey?

By , April 30, 2009 9:13 pm

Here’s my new bus knitting…Monkey by Cookie A.

monkey1

Yes, I just bought her book.  No, I have no idea why I didn’t pick one of those socks to knit first.

Frances is also slightly perplexed.

monkey2

Or maybe they both are just obsessed with the wrist strap on my camera.

Now introducing…

Two weeks ago, my friend Angie and I stumbled upon a website belonging to a fantastic French stuffed animal designer Gwenaël Malcorpi.  Good thing Angie speaks French  because we instantly fell in love and couldn’t find anywhere in the States (or that spoke English) that carried her line of stuffed animals.  On Friday, finally our friends arrived!

Meet Angie’s new best friend Elvis, who is, as the website says, the King Cat of the Rooftops.

elvis1

He’s quite the cool cat (despite the flowered underwear).

elvis2

And now to introduce my new wolfish friend, Monsieur Loup!

loup1

He also can be a bit of an exhibitionist, but we’re working on that.

loup3

Although Gwenaël says that he’s the leader of a group of bad hooligans, Celeste has helped us keep him inline so far.

I love our new furry French friends!

Best Mail Week Ever!

By , April 26, 2009 7:21 pm

Getting good mail is always fun, but a whole week of awesome mail?  Woohoo!

First to show up was the latest Knits magazine…

Then proof that my parents ROCK!!!  The Madre is clearly getting psyched up for the Sock Summit.

And JV made me an absolutely beautiful knitting gauge.

Can you believe the gorgeous purpleheart wood back and inlay??

Even Celeste was impressed.

The last package was filled with so much fantasticness that it deserves it’s own post…

I Got Better

By , March 26, 2009 9:23 pm

The past few weeks I have been a spinning maniac.  It all started when I picked up some beautiful fleece at The Fiber Studio to finish out my last two weeks of Spinning for Knitters at the Weaver’s Guild.

fleece

Kitties, of course, were very interested.

cel_fleece

Those bobbins look a lot smaller than they really are – it took forever to fill them up!

bobbins2

The first yarn I spun was so irregular and nubby and the twist was all over the place.  I call it the Unintentional Bouclé.

blueskein

It’s amazing what a little lot of practice can do.

candy3

This skein is ginormous (compared to the 10 yard skein I had spun before this).

Here’s my haul for four weeks of class…not too shabby!

And of course, a kitty approval bonus!

Because our first guy was doing so great, we decided to expand our collection with two more.

One problem – orchids are kitty magnets.

But I think we might have found a solution…

Last Week

By , March 10, 2009 7:09 pm

Things have gotten a little crazy around here lately and I’ve been slacking on keeping up with my posts.  I had to take a step back today, though, and show you what an awesome week I had last week – two cool presents in one week!!

First up is an amazing Christmas present from my good friend Beckie.  Check out this awesome purple capelet!

capelet1

And it’s reversible!

capelet2

Celeste approves as well.  (Note:  this was taking approximately .2 seconds after I opened the package.)

And rhymeswithfun‘s Ginger Kitty finally came home!

gingercel2

A cute kitty surrounded by yarn – totally meant for me!

gingercel3

Obviously, also a big hit with Celeste.

Thanks for adding to my great week, ladies!!

I made yarn…I think

Yesterday was my second day of Spinning for Knitters that I’m taking through the Weavers Guild at the Textile Center.  Our teacher, Nancy Preckshot, is a great teacher with a wealth of spinning knowledge, but also enough patience to deal with us bumbling newbies.  It definitely took me awhile to figure what I was doing, and even then the going was pretty rough.  But amazingly, by the end of our first 3 hour class, I had yarn!

gnarly1

Granted, it’s probably some of the gnarliest yarn you’ve ever seen, but it’s yarn nonetheless!!

gnarly2

Nancy encouraged us to take a wheel home with us for the duration of the class so we can continue practicing at home.

gnarly3

She also sent us home with 5 oz. of brightly colored fleece to practice with.  No big surprise that mine is purple and turquoise, I’m sure.blueyarn2

Celeste approves of the gnarly yarn (or maybe it’s just the dangly woolly bits…)
